ABOUT D. JOSEPH YOUNG

What makes me tick…

Who am I?

My name is David “Joe” Young.  After dabbling in photography and other forms of media and graphic design for most of my life, I took up photography in earnest in 2015.  While I still consider myself an emerging and aspiring photographer, I work hard to present a body of work that demonstrates a growing maturity, proficiency, and professionalism in the medium and field of photography.  I hope you enjoy the images that I share as much as I enjoy capturing, editing, and publishing them.

CORE VALUE #1

Careful Composition

One of the great hallmarks of great photography is careful composition.  Notice I did not write “correct” composition.  Of course, careful composition means following rules of composition that create movement, interest, and balance.  This I strive to do when composing an image.  But careful composition also encompasses creativity and risk, which I also embrace.  Sometimes, intentionally breaking rules of composition makes for compelling and memorable images.
CORE VALUE #2

Tasteful Editing

I honestly don’t care much for images that are edited beyond recognition, credibility, and realism.  This does not mean that I do not appreciate fine-art photography.  What I do not care for are images that don’t claim that genre distinction, but are edited or altered in a way that is unauthentic.  In my photography, I employ an editing workflow that is minimal and tasteful.  For fine art, I use in-camera or practical techniques as much as possible to achieve a desire effect.
CORE VALUE #3

Photographic Ethicism

For me, photography is about authentically capturing a scene or subject.  Striving for authenticity, means following a certain code of ethics when composing, capturing, editing, and publishing and image.  First, presenting the scene or subject as they are, honestly and respectfully.  Second, composing original images from unique perspectives.  Finally, leaving a small environmental footprint, persevering scenes and subjects for future generations.
